Introducing Freebies List Building with Giveaways
Everyone loves freebies. Some seek to learn something new or receive added value to something they have purchased, say as a bonus. Other people love freebies so much that they only want to know what you will give them for free and are uninterested in anything else you have to say or offer-unless it’s free. Obviously, we want the first type, but we will get the second type as well. Fortunately, the second type of person will generally unsubscribe from your list anyway, and good riddance.
The concept of a giveaway is not new. The whole idea is to find a product to offer that actually provides value-there are way too many people the put up absolute dross-in exchange for a person’s email address. This builds your freebie list and allows you to market to them in the future. And when they buy something from you, even for $1, they come off the freebie list and go on your buyers list.
What Kind of Giveaways?
Giveaways, or Lead Magnets, can be anything of value that you give away for free in exchange for a bit of information, like an email address. They type of lead magnet is up to you. It can be PDF or eBook, audio recording, or possibly video. In any event, don’t skimp on this part. You need to impress your list so they will begin to respect you and that will lead them opening the emails you send them.
How Do I Get These Giveaway Products?
There are several methods of getting quality lead magnets. Some of them are free and thus take more time to put together. Others you can use basically as-is. But make sure it is quality. Have I beat this horse to death yet? I can’t tell you how many times I’ve opted into a list in exchange for a free eBook or video that was really crap. It was clearly not reviewed by the person offering it. Or, perhaps it was and they thought it was OK. My point here is that my immediate reaction was that this is a person that I did not want to take advice from and I unsubscribed from his list right away.
Part of the list building process is to nurture your list. You can’t do that if you started off by giving them bad advice or low quality training material. Don’t fall into the trap of downloading something that appears good, sticking it in your advertising efforts and calling it a day. Anything you offer me will reflect on who you are and what you can provide to me. You want to set yourself up as an honest person who genuinely wants to help others. That’s the way to make it in this market. OK, I’m off my soapbox.
Onto the methods for getting lead magnets.
PLR means Private Label Rights and refers to what you are permitted to do with the information you’ve gotten.
There are many locations online where you can get PLR free or low cost. You can also join membership sites that update their PLR content frequently. Just Google PLR and choose what you like.
Once you’ve found some quality information, download it and thoroughly review it. Check the licensing information that comes with the product. Some will allow you to use as is for sale, others for giveaway or membership sites only. Others require you to modify them to use them. In any case, you own them, and own the rights to them.
I would recommend that you use the PLR as a starting point, making whatever modifications necessary to reflect your informed opinion, and making sure your name/website is in it somewhere.
Content curation is the process of collecting, organizing and displaying information relevant to a particular topic or area of interest.
For example, you could search the library, the internet, newspapers, or your local bookstore to obtain information that you can piece together into a cohesive document (giving credit to the authors and article location) and providing your own interpretation of what it all means. This last part is important. If you want to nurture your list and have them believe in you, you cannot simply cut and paste information together and present it as a finished product. People want to know what you think. Tell them.
Outsourcing and Ghost Writing
Websites like the Warrior For Hire forum, Fiverr, iWrite, etc. all have people willing to write an article, or eBook, or whatever you want for a fee. Be careful here and read reviews for the person you are hiring. Remember that whatever you get from them, you will have to review and make sure it reflects your personal informed opinion. No sense in paying some to write something that you are just going to completely rewrite.
Create It Yourself
By far, the best option is to create the material yourself. This is also the most time consuming because you need to research your topic, possibly test out the methods you are teaching about and post results. But the quality of this type of material is really much better than spending the time to rewrite someone else’s. You will want to keep the size of the product smaller, like a teaser or introduction to a larger, more in-depth product.
OK, I Have My Lead Magnet. Now What?
You have your lead magnet and you want to start getting it out there for people to see and sign up for your list. So, what do you need in order to make that happen? You should have an autoresponder setup with a double opt-in to capture your list. Popular autoresponder choices are aWeber, GetResponse, and MailChimp. See your autoresponder vendor’s instructions for how to set this up.
Create a Squeeze Page
A squeeze page, also called a Landing Page, is where you tell the prospective lead a little bit about your lead magnet (don’t call it that to your prospects, that’s just Internet Market lingo, and provide them with a call-to-action telling them to enter their email to get the download. The key here is to keep it simple. Have a catchy headline, give a brief-very brief description and your call to action. That’s all.
Create a Thank You Page
This is a separate page that thanks the lead for entering their email in exchange for your product. Very simple. It explains that they will be getting an email with download instructions. In reality, the very next email they will get is a confirmation email. This will help weed out the people using fake email information just trying to get free things without signing up for a list. Once they confirm (hence double opt-in), they will get the email with download instructions.
Create a Download Page
Now, the email with download instructions will send those folks to your download page where you can provide them with the download link for their product, once again thanking them and reinforcing your message (personal informed opinion).
Bonus: Monetize The Heck Out of Those Pages
As a friend and colleague would say, “A page without a link is a wasted page”. There is no reason why you couldn’t put “bonus” links on the thank you and download pages that link up to affiliate offers. This gives your new lead added perceived value. You aren’t selling to them, you are giving them the opportunity to click the link to get more information. Simple as pie. And if they do click over and purchase something, you will get a percentage of the sale as a registered affiliate.
So you see, there isn’t anything particularly difficult nor glamorous in freebie list building. But it is an incredibly crucial step in building your business. Without this list it is much more difficult to build a targeted buyers list, which is what you should be striving for. Those lists are the ones you can make money from simply by sending an email.
